DETROIT TECH CITY
Detroit played a significant role in the development and popularization of both EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and Techno, two distinct but related genres of electronic music.
In the early 1980s, a group of DJs and producers in Detroit, including Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, began experimenting with new electronic music styles, drawing on a range of influences including funk, soul, and disco. They developed a sound that was characterized by the use of synthesizers, drum machines, and other electronic instruments to create futuristic, high-energy dance music with a distinctly urban and industrial edge.
This new style of music became known as Techno, and it quickly gained popularity in Detroit's underground club scene. In the mid-1980s, local record labels began releasing techno records, and the genre began to spread beyond Detroit, eventually gaining a global following.
As Techno continued to evolve and develop, it became a major influence on other electronic music genres, including EDM. Detroit-based artists and producers continued to innovate and experiment with new sounds, and their work helped to shape the direction of EDM as it grew in popularity in the 1990s and beyond.
Today, Detroit remains an important center for electronic music, with a thriving underground scene and a rich history of innovation and experimentation. The city is home to a number of influential record labels, festivals, and clubs, and its legacy in the world of electronic music continues to be felt around the globe.
